MUIRURI STUDIO

George Muiruri uses art as a means to express his ideas whilst addressing various issues. He began by creating physical manifestations of his thoughts, which are often cryptic and seemed to make no sense, but in this way, he was able to share them. This has since changed to a biographical manifesto primarily aimed at creating awareness about mental health and on-going activist agendas. He set on this path after suffering from depression for several years and has since taken it upon himself to share his experience with the world through his work. The intention is to start much needed conversations.

Muiruri embraces human error in his work, letting it guide the direction of his thoughts. He aims to bring his audience closer to the creative process, presenting the materials used, mockups and failed attempts together with his final work. Audiences are encouraged to interact with the materials for which he provides no operation instructions. Muiruri is also engaged in extensive woodwork and automobile restoration and brings that experience into his screen-prints, photographs, video-art and sculptures. The free-flow nature of his restoration work, while still bound by a set expectation, is evident in his art; thinking of the finished product first then working out how to create it.

With each medium he addresses different issues. His screen-prints are a narrative about mental illness, what he’s done about it and why we should speak more and reach out to each other.  Photography and Video-art focus on the smaller and less noticed aspects of our lives which he juxtaposes with the things we often give our attention to. They also challenge our perception of scale and our significance as members of a larger ecosystem. The sculptures are made entirely of found objects or discarded waste addressing wasteful practices, pollution and recycling.
